Born in Sri Lanka, Kumar studied typographic design at the London College of Printing. After working in London he lived in Hong Kong for 18 years, working with studios and agencies, and teaching graphic design at the Hong Kong Polytechnic. In 1983 he started his own design consultancy specialising in corporate graphics and publishing design. He has designed many award winning publications including Discovery (Cathay Pacific inflight magazine), Pacific (American Express cardmembers' magazine) and Serendib (the magazine of Air Lanka).
Leaving Hong Kong for Australia in 1988, Kumar now lives and works in Sydney with his wife Sally and their sons Robert and James.
Kumar has worked in publishing in Sydney with magazine and book publishers. As an Art Director for New Woman Magazine, he designed and Art directed cook books before joining Sydney Institute, TAFE NSW Design Centre, Enmore where he was Senior Head Teacher Graphic design, until 2007.
He has always had an interest in food and has featured on ABC radio “Gifted Gourmet” and has had recipes included in publications. In addition to design and cooking his interests include gardening, walking and illustration and travel.
