Public Servant

State: NSW

Age: 35

Dalvinder was born in Singapore and moved out of home to get married at the age of 21- the marriage was arranged - and 14 years later, Dalvinder couldn’t be happier. She is a loving and proud mother to her three children and her mother-in-law still lives with them.

“I’m very energetic, never say no to anything and always like to try something new. I’m motivated and I like challenges. Having three children has made me stronger and a more confident woman.”
It wasn’t until Dalvinder was married that she started to cook. Mostly it was her parents that influenced her cooking style, they made sure that food was the main priority bringing everyone together.

“Once I was married, that is when I started cooking. I learnt over the phone how to cook! My first meal was chappatis with cauliflower and potato curry.”

Dalvinder admires Julie Goodwin who won the MasterChef title in 2009. She says she can relate to her being a housewife and a mum and Julie cooks similar dishes to her.

Dalvinder’s strengths lie in Indian cuisine and her personality in the kitchen is relaxed and calm - her signature dish is lamb curry.

“I like putting ingredients together, I don’t like following recipes.”

Due to religious reasons, Dalvinder has almost no experience of cooking with beef. She thinks this will be a weakness in the competition.

Once a year during Chinese New Year in February, Dalvinder’s takes part in the Dragonboats where she rows with older ladies who have survived breast cancer. She has been rowing with them as a hobby for the last five years on Darling Harbour.

Dalvinder’s dream is to run a home-style restaurant. She has already given it a name “Jazadalu’s Cottage” after the names of some of her family members.
