Bonny found out she was deaf in one ear at age three, and lost the hearing in her other ear when she was just seven years old. But she has not let that hold her back in any aspect of her life.
“It’s never been much of a hindrance. It’s been a challenge, but that’s made me stronger. I want to be a sponge. Be inquisitive and never be complacent.”
Bonny comes from a close family of high achievers. She is the youngest of three girls. Her eldest sister Lauren is a vet, while Ally is a pilot. Her father is an investment banker and her mother runs a website supporting parents of deaf children.
Bonny has a hearing aid and she reads lips well. Smart and determined, she has lived life so far “not letting my hearing disadvantage me in any way”.
Currently working as a chef at Sydney’s Rockpool Bar and Grill, where she has been for the past year, she started her apprenticeship at Park Hyatt in Canberra before moving to Manly Wine by Gazebo. Bonny lives in Sydney and enjoys yoga and the outdoors.
Her signature dish is spatchcock two ways, with corn puree and salad.
Bonny’s cooking hero is Maggie Beer, and she dreams of one day opening a restaurant on a vineyard, using only local produce and lots of wine. But right now, all she wants is to learn as much as possible from the top chefs around the world.
